Finnish-Canadian soprano Eilana Lappalainen is inarguably one of today's most acclaimed interpreters of opera's highly dramatic roles. Her commanding musicality has been praised as "rare perfection," and her stage presence as "ravishing" and "scene-stealing."
Ms. Lappalainen has performed to critical claim in the world's premier opera venues: La Scala, Opera di Roma, Barcelona's Liceu, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, New York City Opera, Seattle Opera, Opéra de Montréal, Bellas Artes Mexico City, Teatro Verdi Trieste, Finnish National Opera, Polish National Opera, Opera North in Norway, two Japan tours of Salome, and San Francisco Opera. She has also sung opera productions with Cincinnati Opera, Michigan Opera, Minnesota Opera, Nashville Opera, Kentucky Opera, Portland Opera, Billings Opera, Opera Hamilton, Opera Ottawa, Marin Opera, Arizona Opera, Staatstheater Essen, Wiesbaden, Dessau, Halle, Mannheim, Bremen, W�rtzburg, Bielefeld, Winterthur, and Prague State Opera. Her extensive repertoire has grown to include leading roles in such operas as Salome, Der Rosenkavalier, Arabella, Der Fliegende Holl�nder, Lohengrin, Fidelio, Peter Grimes, Wozzeck, Der Freischütz, Jenufa, Giovanna D'Arco, Un Ballo in Maschera, I Masnadieri, Madama Butterfly, Suor Angelica, Il Tabarro, Tosca, Turandot, La Fanciulla del West, Andrea Chénier, Cavalleria Rusticana, and Pagliacci.
Recently, she made her UK Debut, singing selections from Cherubini's Medea in Oxford, England, with Oxford Philomusica at Sheldonian Hall; the title role of Salome with the New Israeli Opera and Lithuanian National Opera; and covering Karita Mattila as Leonore in Fidelio in Barcelona's Liceu as well as a concert featuring Isaac Albéniz's Merlin. She sang her first Leonora in Il Trovatore with Virginia Opera; Marie in Wozzeck with Opera di Roma; Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana in Poland and Greece; her Romanian Debut singing a live radio broadcast of Strauss' "Four Last Songs;" a Gala Concert in Taranto, Italy, and Mexico City; Butterfly at the Wetzlar Festpiel; and in Bern, Switzerland, singing the role of Beatrice in Der Vipern by Christian Jost. She has also sung the Verdi Requiem and Mozart Requiem at New York's prestigious Carnegie Hall, and reprised her role as Silvia in the Greek premiere of Mascagni's Zanetto as part of the Festival of the Aegean – in addition to performing the role in the Czech Republic and at Carnegie Hall.
Elysium Recordings released a recording of Zanetto starring Ms. Lappalainen and Jennifer Larmore in the spring of 2008. Then in the fall, she sang a live broadcast of Il Trovatore. In Finland she sang a TV broadcast of a Gala Concert, and she sang the title role for a live broadcast of Salome with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and has recorded the role with Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. Other recordings include Beatrice's Monologue from Vipern, recorded in Winterthur, Switzerland, to be released in 2009; her own CD of Verdi arias, which was recorded in St. Petersburg, Russia; and a Verdi Gala in Dessau. She can be heard as Mimi in the film Café and Tobacco. She has performed concerts with orchestra and recitals in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Kassel, Essen, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Helsinki, Espoo, Turku, Tel Aviv, Toronto, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Switzerland, Poland, and New York's Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
Ms. Lappalainen credits her artistic foundation and acting training to such companies as Opera San Jose (where, as the first principal artist-in-residence, she sang 30 leading roles) and Anhaltisches Theater Dessau (where she sang 25 leading roles).
