Ellen Rabiner
Contralto

Ellen Rabiner, contralto, has been hailed by The New York Times as a "mezzo of creamy tone and forceful lower register," by the Boston Globe as possessing a "rich contralto and both musical and dramatic sensitivity" and by New York Newsday as "a fine singing actress." Her recent Telarc recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor with Boston Baroque prompted Gramophone to write, "Ellen Rabiner's responsive contralto in the 'Qui sedes' is a rare joy."

Ellen Rabiner is engaged again by Metropolitan Opera for the 2007-08 season, and will perform on the legendary stage in their production of Manon Lescaut. A frequent presence with the company since her debut as the First Maid in Elektra, Ms. Rabiner returned to the Metropolitan Opera in 2006-07 as the Shepherdess in Jenufa. Previous Metropolitan Opera performances include Sonyetka in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Mavra Kusminitchna and Matriosha in War and Peace, Schwertleite in Die Walküre, and die Kranke in the company's premiere of Moses und Aron.

Ms. Rabiner has performed frequently in her hometown of New York. She appeared with New York City Opera as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and Konchakovna in Prince Igor, with New York Chamber Ensemble at Alice Tully Hall in Mahler's Rückert Lieder, and in Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Brooklyn Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall. New York audiences have also heard her in the title roles in Vivaldi's Tamerlano and Vivaldi's Arsilda, Regina di Ponto in semi-staged performances at Alice Tully Hall with the Little Orchestra Society.

Ms. Rabiner can be heard in the Telarc recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor with Boston Baroque, and as the Sorceress in the Harmonia Mundi recording of Dido and Aeneas with Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.
