"TAXIMI”
was formed in Stockholm in 1989. The deepest intention
of the group is to expose Greek music, with its
deep roots in the classical ancient and later on in
the pro-Christian and Byzantine years, to the ”non-Greek”
audience.
The word ”TAXIMI” means improvisation, which
is an important part of Greek folk music.
Apart
from some songs and compositions by Mikis Theodorakis
and Manos Hatzidakis which became popular all over the
world and the more commercial and “tourist friendly”
versions of rebetika, the knowledge of Greek folk music
in the world is narrow. This defective and superficial
knowledge about Greek folk music, and other countries’
folk music as well, has of course its explanation in
the commerciality, in the way the big record companies
create “hits and music idols.”
All
this together results in folk music, in most parts
of the Earth, being deported to the museums. What remains
in conserved format does not get nourishment, does
not renew.
Taximi
wants to resist all of this and show that "the
odd is universal, the simple genuine, the folklore sophisticated..."
Appearances
During all these years TAXIMI has, in Scandinavia and
Greece, appeared in many culture arrangements, folk
music festivals, TV and radio programs and on significant
stages such as Berwaldhallen and Herodion Theater. TAXIMI
has also collaborated with different choirs and symphony
orchestras.
TAXIMI has recorded 2 CDs:
Greek rebetika & smyrneika songs and
In Northen Latitudes
The
producer was Swedish Concerts, Caprice.
Performance
for school children:
The Ship of Argos is the name of a much
appreciated performance for children that the group
has toured with the latest two years, among other places
in Stockholm under the direction of State Music Organization
of Stockholm. During the performance the children experience
the movement of Greek music ”from Minor Asia to
Piraeus.”
TAXIMI
got very good reviews and letters, both from school
children and teachers about The Ship of Argos.
